INFORMATION FROM TMBC RE THE HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING SITE AT CUXTON

Medway Council have announced that from 3 June onwards, users of their Household Waste Recycling Centres (“tips”) will have to provide evidence that they are a Medway resident. This means that TMBC residents will no longer be able to use them, including the one located at Cuxton, which residents from the northern areas of our borough tend to use. Medway Council are within their rights to exclude KCC residents from their facilities, although they have always previously accepted that there would be some cross-boundary usage of the tips.

We have already received a number of phone calls, emails & tweets about this. We have spoken to KCC and they advise that although they knew that Medway were planning to do this, they didn’t know when the restriction would be brought in. Clearly this has implications for TMBC residents who use Cuxton as their nearest HWRC. Currently, the alternatives are the KCC HWRCs at Dunbrik (near Sevenoaks), Tovil (Maidstone), Pepperhill (Gravesend) and North Farm (Tunbridge Wells). We are explaining to any callers that TMBC do not operate the HWRCs, and that details of alternatives are on the KCC website: https://www.kent.gov.uk/…/rubbish-and…/find-your-nearest-tip. If anyone wishes to make a formal complaint about Medway Council’s decision they should contact them direct.

We have asked KCC for an update as to any progress they may have made with identifying a site for an HWRC within our borough. They most recently put out a “call for sites” last year but we haven’t yet received an update on the results of that.

In the meantime, we are likely to see increased usage of the TMBC Saturday Freighter Service and our Bulky Collection Service: https://www.tmbc.gov.uk/…/household-waste-special-collectio…
