What to look out for in April

photograph of Primrose
The Primrose (Primula vulgaris) is a small plant and produces flowers which generally vary in colour from pale cream to deep yellow
As soon as the first primroses open, look out for bee-flies (Bombylius major). Fast-moving with furry abdomens and mimicking bees they have a long rigid proboscis, designed for probing tubular flowers for nectar. They breed in the nests of mining bees, where they eat the bees' grubs and pollen stores.

Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) come out of hibernation. Increasing urbanisation and ‘tidier’ gardens are pushing hedgehogs out from the places where most of us live.

Wasps wake up.

Can you tell the difference between the two commonest species?

The common wasp has a distinctive, anchor-shaped mark between its eyes.
